Dr Ian Graves Moves On

After an impressive nineteen years, our Air Quality Section Manager, Dr Ian Graves, left Hill Labs in January this year.  Ian is taking a very well-deserved break to spend time with family, his surfboard and his fishing rod, before deciding his next steps. We wish him all the best and thank him for his many years of commitment to Hill Labs. He will be missed!

Ian joined Hill Labs in 2005, when a desire to be closer to family brought Ian to Hamilton. This was following roles at Pfizer and Lion Breweries. Ian’s nineteen-year tenure speaks of his commitment to Hill Labs, to our customers, and to his ability to forge lasting and meaningful relationships. Those who have been privileged enough to work with him, know that his technical expertise is well matched by his relational approach, playful wit and his infectious humour. These attributes have endeared Ian to colleagues and customers alike.

His understanding of the needs of the industry and his desire and ability to develop fit-for-purpose solutions have enabled excellent outcomes for our customers and in turn for the people and the communities they serve. Ian says that what he enjoyed most about working at Hill Labs is building strong relationships with both staff and customers, employing technology to overcome technical challenges, and contributing valuable data to help protect our communities.

We wish Ian all the best and thank him for his many years of commitment to Hill Labs.

40 Years of Soil Testing

Soil testing holds a special place at Hill Labs. Forty years ago, Roger and Anne Hill started their business by providing soil and leaf testing to customers in agriculture and horticulture. The methods have evolved over the years as improvements have been made, but the fundamentals remain the same. As sample numbers grew, so too did the desire to innovate the process. The operation of processing a soil sample from reception through to analysis is quite manual. This was the driver for the birth of RoSEE (Robotic Soil Extraction Equipment) in 2002.
