Hill News September 2021 - Update from our CEO, Dr Jonno Hill
The headline article in this quarterly newsletter highlights that we have recently attained accreditation for our Covid testing services, with the saliva testing service perhaps being the most interesting to many of our readers. Saliva testing has been attracting a lot of media attention lately, though we have been quietly delivering these services into the Aged Care sector since late 2020.
We employ the “SalivaDirect” methodology, which was developed by New Zealander Anne Wyllie’s group at the Yale School of Public Health in the US. Immediately following its publication in mid-2020, we recognised the scientific and practical merits of this approach, and so established and validated the method in our laboratory shortly after its publication. Since then, the international literature has been building in favour of saliva testing as a practical, low cost, user-friendly way of testing for Covid. The SalivaDirect method is essentially an open-source method – a non-proprietary method, freely available for all to use, and generously made available to laboratories all around the world by Dr Wyllie and the Yale School of Public Health.
On a more personal note, I wanted to recognise how supportive Dr Wyllie has been of our efforts over the last year. I have been humbled by her integrity and generosity of spirit. In my appraisal, she is driven by a genuine desire to ‘do good’, not for personal or financial gain, but for the simple reason that good science can help save lives, which is needed in these challenging times. Anne is a New Zealander we should all be proud of – making an impact on the global stage, and doing so in a principled way.
It is a privilege for us at Hill Labs to be in a position to apply this science here in New Zealand for the benefit of all New Zealanders. As a 100% NZ-owned company that has been providing analytical testing services to kiwis for almost 40 years, we are looking forward to combining this cutting edge science with our reputation for high quality and excellent customer service.
If your business needs to be conducting surveillance testing for Covid for your staff or others under your care, then please get in touch with us. Saliva testing is non-invasive and very accurate, so it could be an important risk mitigation in your business continuity plans.
