What is the day like at work in the Analytical Technology team?

I work with our analytical technology team.  Our job is to support the routine testing teams with training, maintenance and trouble-shooting when things don't work like they should.  We also develop new tests for our clients and set up new technology as it becomes available. So any given day might involve working in the lab on a new method, discussing aspects of a test with our operations team, liaising with a client on a technical problem they might be having, or attending a meeting about improving our computer systems.

How have you progressed through the organisation?

I started fresh out of high school as a lab assistant in our soil testing laboratory and over the last twenty years I have held positions of laboratory technician, team leader, section manager, and I am now a senior technologist.  I have been able to work in many areas of the business and I have had the opportunity to learn from my colleagues and work with the latest analytical technology.  Hills supported me through my tertiary study and allowed me to develop my skills as an analytical chemist.

What is Hill Laboratories like as a place to work?

Hill Laboratories is an interesting place to work.  We have always worked with the latest technology and gadgets and while there is an element of routine work about the job we also have the chance to work on projects for new tests or support systems for our work.  But the best thing about Hills are the people.  I started out when there were 12 staff and now there are over 280 but we've maintained the friendly and informal atmosphere.  There is an active social club and many friendships have formed over the years.  The boss still walks around and chats with the staff and in many ways it remains a family business and I like that it has remained so.
