Timber Testing

Leading the way with our timber testing

IVS have partnered with Hill Laboratories to develop a comprehensive Timber Preservation Quality Assurance Programme and Timber Testing service. The IVS/Hill Laboratories partnership delivers a unique set of benefits to the timber industry, drawing on IVS' extensive knowledge of wood processing and quality assurance delivering a world class analytical testing service.

Range of tests:

Timber Treatment tests:

Boron
Water-borne boron salts are applied to wood mostly by vacuum pressure impregnation. Results are reported as Boric Acid Equivalent (BAE). Boron is typically used in house framing timber.

CCA (Copper, Chromium and Arsenic sales)

CCA is a water-borne preservative treatment of pine and other timber. CCA is pressure impregnated into the wood and has a high resistance to chemicals leaching out of the timber over time. This high resistance is due to the chromium which locks the elements copper and arsenic into the wood. The arsenic and copper elements protect from insect and fungal attack. Timber which has been treated with CCA is clean, odourless and has a slight green colour. CCA can be used for a range of applications including outdoor, underground or underwater applications.

LOSP (Light Organic Solvent-borne preservative)
LOSP is a solvent-borne preservative treatment of pine and other timber using tebuconazole and propiconazole as anti-fungal agents and can include permethrin as an insecticide. The organic solvent takes the preservative into the wood and is drawn out in the last stages of treatment leaving the preservative in the wood. LOSP treated timber has long lasting protection against decay and insect attack. LOSP treated timber is great for appearance applications such as external joinery, due to it leaving the light coloured appearance unchanged after treatment and is also used in house framing.

Other tests are available such as:

  • Moisture content
  • Wood density
  • ACQ – (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) as Copper
  • Copper Azole
  • CuN – (Copper Naphthenate) as Copper
  • Bifethin
