The Environmental Division at Hill Laboratories are doing some seawater and sand testing from the Bay of Plenty as part of the monitoring and clean-up from the Rena disaster. See article in the Waikato times here.
Rena Oil Spill Detail:
5 October 2011 2.18am: Rena, a Liberia- flagged 235m vessel, was heading to Tauranga from Napier when it crashed into the Astrolabe Reef, about 7km north of Motiti Island. MNZ said the cargo ship, which was carrying 1700 tonnes of heavy oil fuel and 200 tonnes of diesel, was on a 10- degree list and some fuel had leaked from its hydraulic pumps. Oil has been leaking from the ship. The chromatogram of a typical Fuel Oil #6 is shown. Dispersant has been sprayed by helicopter.
