Method development of our Mehlich3 soil test has resulted in the laboratory now being able to report Mehlich3 Boron to a lower detection limit (0.15 mg/L). This means the test is now more useful for a range of crops where low soil boron levels could not previously be measured by this method. New Zealand soils are generally low in Boron but cautious application of this nutrient is important as many crops are sensitive to high levels. Plant testing is strongly advised before major changes to trace element programmes are instigated.
