New testing being introduced in the environmental division
Hill Laboratories is pleased to announce that the following tests have been developed with IANZ accreditation and are available on request:
1/ EDTA & NTA in potable water by GCMS
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) belong to a class of compounds known as chelating agents that are most commonly used in household detergents and personal care products. EDTA has also been used extensively in medicine for the removal of toxic heavy metals, and NTA is used as a phosphate replacement in laundry detergents because of its ability to chelate calcium and magnesium ions. Because of their common use, levels of both compounds in waste waters can be relatively high (0.05-0.5mg/L) and there is concern about their potential impact on surface and groundwater. EDTA and NTA have Maximum Acceptable Values (MAV's) in the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards 2008 of 0.7mg/L and 0.2mg/L respectively. They are structurally related but where NTA is readily biodegradable, EDTA is not and therefore is a potential tracer for wastewater impact in groundwater.
2/ Formaldehyde in water by LCMSMS
The use of LCMSMS in analysing for formaldehyde in water offers a significant improvement in quality and reliability over the previous HPLC-UV analysis, and is now IANZ accredited.
3/ Gases in ground water by GC-FID
The analysis of methane, ethane and ethene in ground water is now IANZ accredited.
